Expert Posts: 2196 | The newest issue (July) of FLW has a good article on fizzing, complete with pictures that pin-point the area for needle insertion.

I went about 1/4" above the gullet and about 1/8" to the left of center. Barely put the needle in to hold the place, then push under the water and insert the needle until bubbles come out. You don't have to push the needle deep at all.

From what I have seen and read it seems you can hit vital organs either way. The guy in this video that one of the members posted makes it look quick, easy, and fool-proof but im betting he's done this a million times. The last thing I want to do is cause more harm or damage than good to a fish. Seem's there little to no room for error on this. If you don't hit the right area it can kill the fish and if you let too much air out of the swim bladder it will sink like a rock straight to the bottom. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/how-to-fizz-a-bass.... Another member posted this link below which as I read it says go through the mouth. I guess it's personal preference or what you feel more comfortable or confident in doing. http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/columns/story?page=b_... Thanks to all the members that post this information!!! It's awesome that people on here are trying to serve a greater good and do there part to educate us so we can keep our fish alive and well.

I thought that's the only time this was required. When you pulled a fish up from really deep. And .. how do you know it even needs it at all? I probably won't ever catch anything that requires it .. but I am now curious. :-) TT

I havent had to fizz any of our fish until after the weigh in and its only been a handful of them. Most fish will balance out with the clips and you wont even need the needle. But when you have to, through the mouth works just fine.
